The Southwest Nordic Center operates four yurts near Cumbres Pass, CO. Cumbres Pass is 14 miles north of Chama, NM and 35 miles west of Antonito, CO. This area has reliably excellent snow conditions, varied terrain, and spectacular scenery. Click on the yurt that you would like information about.

Neff Mountain Yurt-

Trailhead: On Colorado 17, 3.5 miles north of Cumbres Pass or 3 miles south of La Manga Pass, at the junction with FR 116, the Neff Mountain Road.

Parking: Excellent parking on the east side of Colorado 17.

Trailhead Elevation: 9,800'

Yurt Elevation: 10,400'

             Rio Grande National Forest

General Description: It is a beautiful 2.75 mile ski through the woods to the open meadow area of the yurt. This location is in close proximity to some great backcountry bowls. There is also excellent tree skiing. Other skiing options are to tour around the top of Neff Mountain for the views or trail ski out to Trujillo Meadows Reservoir and points beyond.

Flat Mountain Yurt

Trailhead: On Colorado 17, just north of Cumbres Pass at the junction with FR 118, the Trujillo Meadows Reservoir Road.

Parking: Parking is either at the pullout for FR 118 on the west side of Colorado 17 or just south of this pullout on the east side of the highway.

Trailhead Elevation: 10,020'

Yurt Elevation: 11,100'

        Rio Grande National Forest

General Description: It is a 4.5 mile ski across open meadows to the yurt. From the yurt one can access the ridge that runs from Cumbres to Wolf Creek Passes. The views into the Chama River Basin from this ridge are breathtaking. The skiing includes the 2500-3000' drop off into this basin. Extended touring intermingled with turns is a highlight of this yurt.

Trujillo Meadows Yurt-

Trailhead: On Colorado 17, just north of Cumbres Pass at the junction with FR 118, the Trujillo Meadows Reservoir Road.

Parking: Parking is either at the pullout for FR 118 on the west side of Colorado 17 or just south of this pullout on the east side of the highway.

Trailhead Elevation: 10,020'

Yurt Elevation: 10,400'

             Rio Grande National Forest

General Description: It is an easy tour to the yurt along snow covered forest service roads. There is gentle open slopes out the front door of the yurt perfect for beginning and intermediate telemarkers. Advanced skiers will have fun looking for shots on the extensive north facing tree slopes. A full day loop is possible up to the Flat Mtn. ridge and back via the Los Pinos Creek.

Grouse Creek Yurt-

Trailhead: On Co. 17 6.5 miles north of Cumbres Pass and 1.2 miles south of La Manga Pass at the intersection with FR 114, the Red Lake Trail Road.

Parking: Is on Co. 17 on the east side of the highway just north of the intersection with FR 114, in the the large plowed pullout.

Trailhead Elevation: 10,200'

Yurt Elevation: 11,200'

Rio Grande National Forest

General Description: It is a 4+ mile ski gaining a thousand feet in elevation. Waxless skis or climbing skins usually work best for this tour. One can see the fourteener Sierra Blanca across the San Luis Valley from the deck of the yurt. The ridge behind the yurt offers easily accessible open slope turns. Extended ski tours into the South San Juan Wilderness are available for those weishing to add some adventure to their turns.
